If you’re not ready to digitize today, that’s okay. Until then, you should take a serious look at how your tapes are stored in order to preserve the quality and contents, and to maximize the potential for success when you are ready to digitize your tapes. The image is an actual example of a tape that has mold in it due to improper storage. Following a few basic steps can help prevent that from happening to your tapes.

TAPE STORAGE RECOMMENDATIONS

Use these guidelines for proper storage and care of your tapes:

  • Keep your tapes indoors and make sure the average temperature is between 68-77 degrees Fahrenheit. Leaving your tapes outdoors or in a garage for extended periods can be damaging to your tapes, contribute to their degradation, and expose them to environmental elements.

  • Keep your tapes in plastic cases when possible. Cases help prevent debris or bugs from entering your tapes.

  • To obtain the best quality from your tapes, try to get them digitized within 15-20 years from when you first captured the video. The chances of a non-functioning or distorted tape increase the older the tape.
